Energy and Society

The Aston Martin One-77 has an average mass of 3307 lbs (1500 kg)

The gravitational acceleration of the Earth (g) is 9.81 m/s2

What is the gravitational potential energy of an Aston Martin One-77 at 10 m in the air? This is important to determine because sports cars are sometimes stored/transported at high altitudes, and if the One-77 would be dropped from 10 m, it could be damaged.

Step 1: Since we have the mass of the car, the gravitational acceleration of Earth's atmosphere, and the height of the object in question, we can determine Eg, the gravitational potential energy. This will tell us with how much energy the car would hit the ground, if dropped.

In conclusion, with a force of 147 kiloJoules, it would be dangerous if an Aston Martin One-77 was dropped from a height of 10 metres
